We left Lochinver to head up to the smaller Kinlochbervie. On the way we past the Old Man of Stoer - a 60m sea stack. Its impressive to see - but perhaps best photographed from the land as directly from the sea it was very well camouflaged against the cliff behind.

Kinlochbervie is the best and closest waiting place for a good window to get around Cape Wrath. We ideally need 2 days of good weather to get around the Cape and accross the north coast of Scotland to either Scabster or Stromness.

Kinlochbervie has a fishing harbour - without much activity - a small co-op store, and 15 minutes walk up the hill there is a small hotel with a bar.

Sunday 3rd August

We made an aborted attempt to round the cape to Loch Eriboll - but once we were out at sea the swell was already very large - with waves of perhaps 3-5m. We were in company with Haamish, who lives in and sails from Orkney, and he advised that indicated it would be far worse at the Cape Wrath and that he was turning back. We chose to follow back. With more stronger winds forecast for tomorrow, it's likely to be Tuesday that we will try again.
